Paws and Portraits: How to Intentionally Include Your Dog in Your Colorado Wedding

If you are like many of our couples, your dog isn’t just a pet—they are a member of the family. And when you decide to get married in a place as dog-friendly as the Colorado mountains, it only feels natural to have your four-legged best friend by your side.

However, as any seasoned planner will tell you, including a pet in a high-altitude celebration requires more than just a cute floral collar. It requires a plan. Here is how to navigate the logistics of a dog-friendly wedding while keeping the experience intentional for everyone involved.

1. The Ultimate Witness: Self-Solemnization

One of the most unique aspects of getting married in Colorado is that we are a self-solemnization state. This means you don't technically need an officiant or human witnesses to make it official. If you want your dog to "sign" your marriage license with a paw print, you can! It is a soulful way to involve them in the ceremony and makes for an incredible story (and photo op) to look back on.

2. Venue Logistics & Pet Professionals

Before you pick out a doggy tuxedo, the first step is a practical one: check with your venue. Every Western Slope venue has different rules. Some may be entirely dog-friendly, while others may only allow pets to be outdoors during the ceremony or cocktail hour.

To keep your peace of mind intact, I highly recommend hiring a professional pet attendant. These specialists are worth their weight in gold. They handle the transport from your hotel to the venue, keep your pup hydrated and calm during photos, and—most importantly—whisk them back to your accommodations once the loud music and "party mode" begin. This allows you to enjoy your reception without wondering if someone remembered to take the dog out.

3. The Reception Reality Check

Even if you are hosting a tented reception where dogs are welcome, they should never be left to roam unattended. Between the loud music, the moving feet, and the high-energy environment, even the most socialized dog can become overwhelmed.

Beyond their comfort, there is the "food factor." We’ve all heard the horror stories of a curious pup getting into the dessert table or the buffet. Not only does this leave your guests hungry, but it can lead to a medical emergency. Nothing halts a celebration faster than a trip to the emergency vet because the dog found the chocolate brownies. Keeping your pet supervised ensures they stay safe and your wedding menu stays intact.

4. Timeline Intentionality

If you want your dog included, they need a spot on the wedding timeline. We have to account for their travel time, "potty breaks," and enough time for them to get their energy out before walking down the aisle.

When properly cared for and integrated into the schedule, dogs add a layer of joy and personality to the day that is truly special. But without that structure, they can unintentionally cause chaos. By working with a planner to map out these "pet-care windows," you ensure that your dog’s presence is a highlight of the day, not a distraction from it.
