How to Create a Wedding That Actually Feels Like You (And Not Just a Standard Checklist)

When you start planning a destination wedding, it’s easy to get swept up in standard checklists, traditional timelines, and generic templates. But when you look back on your day years from now, you won't remember the color of the tablecloths or whether you followed every traditional rule.

What you will remember—and what your guests will talk about for years—are the moments that felt completely, authentically you.

This past summer in Ouray, I had the privilege of guiding a wedding for a couple, G & F, who built their entire celebration around their story from start to finish. Every single touchpoint was packed with personal history, family heritage, and genuine joy.

If you’re looking to ditch the cookie-cutter mountain templates and host a day that feels 100% intentional, here is a look inside their story—and a guide on how you can do the exact same for your wedding.

A Summer in Ouray: What Total Intention Looks Like

G & F didn't plan their wedding to put on a high-pressure performance. They built an experience that welcomed their favorite people directly into their world.

Here is how their story unfolded across their celebration:

  • Building the Foundation Together: Before the main events even began, friends and family gathered on private family property to hand-build their chuppah. Every single structural piece was adorned with personalized, meaningful items from their loved ones. Nearby, friends came together in the kitchen to cook and serve their Shabbat dinner from scratch.

  • Honoring How It All Began: For their welcome party, they hosted a traditional contra dance at a local venue.Contra dancing was how they met many of their close friends and spent their earliest dates when they first got together—so sharing that energy with their guests was non-negotiable.

  • Deeply Personal Ceremony Details: On the wedding morning, their videographer conducted intimate, personal interviews with their family members. Before stepping under the chuppah, they hosted a vibrant Tish and Ketubah signing that included all of their family and close friends.

  • A Surprise Family Heritage Tribute: Right after the ceremony, as guests gathered in the courtyard for cocktails, a surprise polka band marched out! Everyone kicked off their shoes and danced together in the open air—a surprise tradition honoring the groom’s parents, who did the exact same thing at their own wedding decades ago.

  • Bringing Their Journey Full Circle: To close out the night, they flew in a live band all the way from Anchorage,Alaska—a band they fell in love with listening to back when they lived in the Pacific Northwest.

Months later, looking through their photos, you can still feel the overwhelming amount of love, connection, and energy in the air. It wasn't just a party; it was a living reflection of their journey together.

How to Infuse Your Own Story into Your Celebration

You don't need to fly in a band from Alaska or host a polka dance to make your wedding unique. Creating an intentional, personal wedding simply comes down to asking yourselves the right questions during the planning process.

If you want your day to feel authentic, start by brainstorming, sit down and talk through these questions with your partner:

1. What defined the early days of your relationship?

Think back to when you first started dating. Was there a specific venue, activity, or hobby that brought you together?

  • How to use it: If you fell in love while trail running or skiing, incorporate that energy into your welcome party. If you spent your early dates at a local record store, use vintage vinyl for your guest book or table markers.

2. What is an everyday ritual you both love right now?

What is something you do together every single week that feels completely like "you"?

  • How to use it: If you love making sourdough or brewing espresso together on Sunday mornings, gift mini jars of local honey or custom coffee beans in your guest welcome bags. If you’re huge foodies, skip standard wedding chicken and work with a premier local chef to build a customized six-course tasting menu paired with your favorite wines.

3. What is something everyone knows you for?

Is there a signature cocktail you always make for friends? A favorite late-night snack you order after a night out? A specific spot in Southwest Colorado where you go to recharge?

  • How to use it: Serve your absolute favorite late-night comfort food—like wood-fired flatbreads, artisanal tacos, or warm churros—right on the dance floor. If you love a specific spirit, host an intimate mezcal or bourbon tasting bar during your reception.

4. What family roots or heritage can you honor?

Your wedding isn't just about the two of you—it’s the joining of two family histories.

  • How to use it: Look at old family wedding photos. Is there an heirloom you can incorporate, a traditional dance you can surprise your parents with, or a family recipe your caterer can elevate for your rehearsal dinner?

Let the Logistics Serve the Experience

The secret to bringing a deeply personal wedding to life is simple: when your logistics are dialed behind the scenes, you have the total freedom to actually enjoy the moments you planned.

When you aren't moonlighting as a remote project manager or stressing over vendor load-in schedules, you get to sit back, sip champagne, laugh with your family, and be 100% present for every single memory.
